Oregon court procedures

Find the rules and next-step resources for your court, case and stage.

Start with your notice, order or case

Identify the court or agency, case number, case type and what you need to do next. Keep documents, service records and filing confirmations together. Choose a section below for official instructions and source details.

Shared sources appear in all 36 county filters. A county selection adds existing circuit-court destinations, local rules, forms and civil legal-aid referrals. Confirm the court handling your case and its current instructions.

Choose the court and governing rules

Identify the court, case type and document you received. Read the applicable statewide rules, district local rules and case orders together. Circuit, appellate, Tax Court, justice and municipal courts have different procedures. Federal and Tribal matters require their own rules and court contacts.

Filing, responses and fees

Identify whether you are starting a case or responding in an existing case. Keep the summons, notice and receipt date; ask about the correct filing or response, service and required date. Check filing status and any acceptance or rejection notice. A fee application or technical-support request does not automatically preserve a deadline.

Service, discovery, subpoenas and evidence

Distinguish serving a summons from serving later documents. Check the applicable service method and keep proof of service. For discovery, witnesses and subpoenas, confirm the governing rules, confidentiality restrictions and case orders. Organize your proposed exhibits, identify how they can be authenticated and ask about delivery and exchange instructions; collecting a document does not establish that it is admissible.

Motions, hearings, trial and dispute resolution

Read the hearing notice and any scheduling or pretrial order. Confirm location or remote access, exhibit exchange, witnesses and the purpose of the hearing. Ask which motion and response procedures apply. Mediation, arbitration and trial have different rules; participation does not automatically change other obligations.

Judgments, payment and enforcement

Obtain the entered judgment or order and identify the relief it grants. Ask counsel about enforcement, exemptions, objections, satisfaction or available review. Payment, a satisfaction filing and challenging an award are different actions. The revenue-agency garnishment source below addresses that agency’s collection process; do not use it as a universal private-creditor packet.

Appeals, judicial review and appellate records

Identify the decision being reviewed and ask promptly whether it is appealable, who can seek review and which filing route applies. An appeal is not simply a new trial. Arrange the designated record and transcript, follow brief and motion rules and confirm service. Filing an appeal does not automatically stay enforcement; obtain advice about any separate stay request. Use official fee and access instructions.

Criminal proceedings and representation

Keep charging documents, release conditions, hearing notices and orders. Ask defense counsel about arraignment, release, discovery, motions, trial, sentencing and review. A plea petition is a legal decision to discuss with counsel. Criminal procedural sources below are separate from the substantive Penal Code collection. This site does not provide a complete defense workflow or decide eligibility for appointed counsel.

Family, housing and small claims

Use the packet for your case type and role. Family service and modification, dependency cases, eviction and small claims use different processes. A modification request does not itself change an existing order. Do not assume that ordinary civil appeal or evidence procedures apply to a small-claims hearing. Ask about current court instructions and available legal help.

Agency hearings and Tax Court routes

Start with the agency decision and its review instructions. An agency hearing request, internal appeal and judicial review are separate stages, and different agencies use different routes. Tax Court proceedings have their own divisions, rules and filing instructions. A complaint or records request does not replace the review filing specified in your notice.

Language, disability access and legal help

Contact the responsible court about language interpretation, disability accommodations and accessible participation. Confirm requests and arrangements before the hearing. Court interpretation, agency language assistance and access to legal representation use separate processes.

Select your county above for the existing circuit court, supplementary local rules, forms and civil legal-aid listings. Justice, municipal, federal and Tribal court matters require separate court contacts and applicable rules.
