Request that a debt collector stop contact and understand the limits
Consumer Financial Protection Bureau · Shared Oregon or applicable federal route
Official sample letter and current explanation of a written stop-contact request and its limits.
Where and how to proceed: prepare, file and follow up
Start here: Verify the collector and review the difference between disputing the debt and stopping contact.
1. Is this for me?
People considering the named complaint, review or assistance route; the agency must confirm jurisdiction and individual applicability.
Service area: Oregon or applicable federal route; confirm venue and agency jurisdiction.
2. What should I prepare?
Some documents may be conditional. Ask about alternatives. Checkmarks are temporary and are not saved or sent.
3. Where and how do I submit?
Send the request to the collector. CFPB says an electronic method may be used if the collector offers one; keep a copy.
- Verify the collector and review the difference between disputing the debt and stopping contact.
- Read CFPB’s current explanation and adapt the stop-contact sample accurately.
- Send the written request by an accepted route and keep a copy and receipt evidence.
- Preserve any later contacts and obtain separate help for court papers or a possible violation.
Timing: A stop-contact request can be made at any time, but a separate dispute may have a 30-day validation period. Court deadlines remain separate.
4. What will it cost?
The sample is available without a download charge. Postage, optional receipt and other costs remain separate.
5. What happens after I submit?
Keep communication logs and permitted notices. A CFPB complaint is a separate route if collection problems continue.
6. What if something goes wrong?
Stopping contact does not cancel the balance, prevent credit reporting or answer a lawsuit; certain further-action notices remain permitted.
Language, disability and offline help
Use CFPB assistance channels for complaint access; ask about language and disability support.
Choose your step and follow-up instructions
Work through the existing instructions for this route. Reviewing a step does not complete a legal requirement.
Official source navigation reviewed on 2026-10-18. Confirm current agency coverage, accepted form, submission route and the actual notice or event dates. No personal deadline, eligibility, legal violation, remedy, representation or filing-readiness determination is made. Stopping contact does not cancel a debt. The collector may still send permitted notices about further action and may pursue other lawful collection, including litigation.
